IMF Data: Dollar Dominance to 2046, Challenging Bitcoin's Reserve Currency Dream
According to a CryptoSlate report analyzing IMF data, the U.S. dollar is projected to maintain its dominance as the world's primary reserve currency until approximately 2046. The report suggests that Bitcoin's path to becoming a global reserve currency faces significant hurdles, primarily due to the dollar's established role in global foreign-exchange reserves, which totaled $12.94 trillion in the second quarter of 2025, with the dollar accounting for 56.32%. The analysis highlights the challenges in displacing the dollar, considering its prevalence in foreign-exchange transactions and its backing by U.S. Treasurys. The report distinguishes between Bitcoin becoming a reserve asset and achieving reserve-currency primacy, noting that policy and market developments could further solidify the dollar's position.
