Greenland as 10,000 EH/s Bitcoin Mining Hub with US Backing?
Reports indicate that the potential acquisition of Greenland by the United States has sparked interest in the island's power projects, particularly for Bitcoin mining. The White House has acknowledged ongoing discussions regarding the purchase. Greenland's government intends to launch a public tender in 2026 for two hydropower sites, Tasersiaq and Tarsartuup Tasersua, which could potentially generate over 9,500 gigawatt-hours annually. While Greenland's current installed hydropower capacity is smaller, expansion plans, such as the Buksefjord project, aim to increase capacity. Utilizing surplus energy near existing power plants could support smaller-scale mining operations. The island's potential to become a gigawatt-scale mining hub hinges on the full utilization of the tendered sites.
