Crypto Hack Frequency Down, Financial Impact Soars in 2025: SlowMist Report
According to a SlowMist report, crypto hacks decreased by half in 2025, but financial losses significantly increased. The defining security event was the $1.46 billion theft from Bybit, attributed to state-sponsored actors. There were approximately 200 security incidents in 2025, compared to 410 the previous year, yet total losses climbed to about $2.935 billion, up from $2.013 billion in 2024. The average loss per event more than doubled, rising from roughly $5 million to nearly $15 million. While DeFi protocols absorbed the highest volume of hits, centralized exchanges accounted for the bulk of capital destruction. The rise in losses is linked to organized crime syndicates and nation-state actors using sophisticated tools and tactics.
